Choose Erie effort moves ahead

Worries that displaced workers would leave the area prompted Scott Slawson, president of Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America at GE Transportation, to ask Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper for help.

That call turned into a series of conversations and eventually into the formation of a broad-based initiative, called Up for the Job, focused on using the skills of the local workforce to attract new employers to the Erie area.

Seven months after Erie County Council voted 6-1 to spend $36,000 to develop a plan that includes the creation of a brand and marketing efforts, Dahlkemper introduced a new marketing tool Thursday with a new website, a new name and a new logo.

The name, which will be found prominently across the top of the website, is Choose Erie.

Dahlkemper, who was joined by Slawson, Mayor Joe Schember, Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership Chairman Tom Tupitza and other local officials, showed off a Beta version of the website, which will be found eventually — hopefully within 100 days, she said — at

The website already features colorful, inviting photos of Erie and a video featuring interviews with workers from GE Transportation and footage from American Tinning and Galvanizing.

There’s one professional video on the site now, but Dahlkemper expects that others will be added, featuring other Erie workplaces.
